"EISENIA FOETIDA" aka red worm or manure worm
In order to have a high-performance vermicomposter from the start, it is preferable to obtain a sufficient quantity depending on our vermicomposter. However, we can very well start with fewer earthworms and let their population increase.
Unlike large earthworms that aerate the soil by digging galleries in it, the red worm prefers the upper layer of the soil. It is greedy: it can process each day an amount of organic matter equivalent to more than half of its weight (e.g.: 500 g of earthworms can consume 250 g of organic matter per day). Very resistant, it accepts life in captivity and tolerates different conditions of temperature, humidity and acidity.
